Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Knife Review
One of the most popular every day carry knives on the market today is the Spyderco Tenacious. Hundreds and hundreds of reviews of the Tenacious have been left on Amazon alone.
Spyderco knives have almost a cult following. It seems you either love the look of the trademark Sypderco hole or you hate it. There isn't a whole lot of middle ground here.
But there isn't a lot of argument when it comes to the quality of Spyderco's products. They use quality blade and handle materials on all of their knives. Let's take a look at some of the features that make the Spyderco Tenacious such a popular knife for EDC.
Blade Length and Knife Weight
- 3 3/8" Blade Length
- 4 1/2" Closed Length
- 7 3/4" Open Length
- .118" Blade Thickness
- Weighs 4.1 Ounces
Blade Design Advantages & Disadvantages
Leaf-Shaped with a Flat Grind - The Tenacious uses Spyderco's common leaf shaped blade which is similar to a spear point. This shape gives you a long cutting surface and a great place to put your thumb on the top of the blade spine. It also makes for a very sharp point.
The flat grind on this blade has the advantage of being easier to sharpen and makes for a sharper knife edge. It also reduces the drag when you are cutting through something. The disadvantage is that it will need to be sharpened more than some other grind designs.
8CR13MOV Stainless Steel - This steel is very similar to AUS8A steel. It has slightly more carbon for wear resistance than AUS8A. This is an easy stainless steel to sharpen but it will need to be touched up more than higher priced steels like S30V.
8CR13MOV is a top of the line Chinese made stainless steel . It's designed for strength, hardness, and edge sharpness ability. That being said it does require more maintenance to prevent corrosion that some other stainless steels.
Handle (Scales) Material
G-10 Scales - G-10 is always a great everyday carry knife handle material. The glass fibers with epoxy make for strong waterproof scales. The texture on the Spyderco Tenacious' G-10 handles are not too aggressive and work great whether your hands are wet or not.
The handles are set up to allow the pocket clip to be mounted in four different combinations. You can carry it tip up, tip down, right handed or left handed. The clip rides decent in your pocket but if you prefer a lower profile clip they sell them on eBay.
Opening & Locking Mechanisms
Manual Spyderco Hole - All Sypderco edc knives have their trademark hole design. You either love the look or hate it. The thumb hole allows you to open the knife left or right handed and with or without gloves on.
Walker Liner Lock - Custom knifemaker Michael Walker designed this locking system. It basically uses a leaf-like spring split from one of the inside liners. This spring lock moves over to securely hold the backside of the blade tang when the knife is in the open position.
The liner lock has nice jimping to make it easy to close the knife. This can be done with one hand although with the jimping it's easier to close if you are right handed.
The Tenacious is covered by Spyderco's Limited Lifetime Warranty. Spyderco guarantees their blades to be free of defects and faulty workmanship. If the Tenacious should ever fail you because of this, simply send it back to their Golden, Colorado location for repairs or replacement.
Spyderco will also sharpen the Tenacious for free if you send it to this same location along with $5 for return shipping.
