Cutco Hunting Knife Model 5717 Review

Cutco Hunting Knife

Chances are you have heard of Cutco knives.  Cutco has been making knives in the USA since 1949 in Olean, New York.  They are the largest manufacturer of kitchen cutlery in the USA and Canada.  What you might not know is they actually make a Cutco hunting knife.

Cutco has always been known for it's incredibly sharp knives right out of the box.  They also hold an incredible edge for a long time.  Another thing Cutco is known for is their free sharpening service.  If your knife ever becomes dull and you don't want to sharpen it yourself then simply ship it back.  You can even request a representative to come to your house to sharpen your hunting knife.

Sounds good, huh?  Well let's take a look at some of the other great features that Cutco has put into their hunting knives line.  Then you can decide if this is the best hunting knife for you.

Blade Length, Blade Thickness, and Knife Weight

  • 4 3/8" Blade
  • 10 1/4" Overall

  • Knife weighs 7.5 oz.

What Comes in the Box?

Blade Design Advantages & Disadvantages

Cutco DD Blade

The Cutco 5717 knife is a drop point design knife with a gut hook.  The drop point makes it less likely to cut through hides while skinning.  The built in gut hook also completes it's task quickly and minimizes puncturing the gut cavity.

The 5717 is available in a standard straight edge or in their Double-D serrated blade design.  The Double-D is an interesting option here because the serrations run the complete blade length and are different than normal knife serrations.

Double-D blades have 3 recessed cutting edges.  These edges are designed to cut down, backwards, and forwards effortlessly.  This is probably Cutco's claim to fame in the hunting knife world.  Several hunters report that they can field dress and butcher more than a dozen animals without sharpening.

The disadvantage to the Double-D blade is you don't want to try to sharpen it yourself. You are better off sending it back to Cutco and they will sharpen it for free.  Luckily you only need to do this every few years.

Blade Material

440A High-Carbon Stainless Steel - 440A is a nice blend of corrosion resistance and blade hardness. This alloy also helps to improve the overall blade strength.  This is similar to the metals used in surgical tools.

Handle (Scales) Material

Kraton Handles - Kraton is a synthetic replacement for rubber.  It's flexible, weather resistant and provides a great hand grip even when wet.  The non-slip properties is what I like most about Kraton handles.  These handles are available in standard black or high visibility orange so you won't lose your knife.

Knife Sheath

cutco knife sheath

The Cutco Hunting Knife 5717 with gut hook wouldn't be complete without a good sheath.  Luckily Cutco provides just that with a quality leather sheath with a snap enclosure.  The black leather comes stamped with Cutco's name and logo.  This sheath will do a great job of protecting the blade from possible damage and from the elements.

Warranty

Cutco's Forever Warranty -  Just like Buck Knives, Cutco has a forever warranty on their knives against defects.  If a defect ever causes the knife to fail Cutco will repair or replace the knife for free.

If it's your fault (and who hasn't done something stupid with their knife before), Cutco will replace it for 50% off a new knife.

Where Cutco is different is they also have a Forever Sharpness Guarantee.  If your knife ever dulls, send it back to Cutco and they will sharpen it for free.  Simply pay the shipping.  You can also request an agent to come to your house to sharpen the knife using their online form.

To top it off, Cutco also has a 15 Day Unconditional Money Back Guarantee.  Basically if at anytime during the first 15 days of purchase you decide you don't like the knife, simply contact customer service and Cutco will refund your purchase.  Pretty sweet warranty from top to bottom!

  • Doube-D blades stay sharp a long time
  • Non-slip handles
  • Quality leather sheath
  • Available with black or orange handles
  • Rock Solid Forever Warranty on defects and sharpness
  • Don't want to sharpen the Double-D blade yourself
  • Thinner blade than some other hunting knives

Final Thoughts

The Cutco Hunting Knife Model 5717 has a lot of great features that you just don't see on many other blades.  The unique Double-D blade is a huge selling point and one of the reasons I think you should own one of these fine hunting knives.

It's a quality knife made in the USA by an old knife company.  Don't let the fact that Cutco is known more for their kitchen knives scare you away from getting what might be the best hunting knife for you.
